“Governor General calling herself ‘head of state’ riles monarchists” October 7, 2009

A Rideau Hall spokesperson explained the reference, in a response to questions from Canwest News Service, as follows: “As the representative of the Crown in Canada, the Governor General carries out the duties of Head of State, and therefore is de facto Head of State.”

But that response has only further stunned members of the Monarchist League of Canada, which reacted sharply to Jean’s speech and her apparent self-promotion to a higher station in Canada’s constitutional monarchy.

“This, of course, is very concerning,” said Robert Finch, the league’s chairman. “It is the Queen who is the head of state. The Governor General is simply the representative of the head of state — not head of state herself.”
